Facebook has done away with its traditional GivingTuesday matching program and replaced it with a matching program for people that set up recurring monthly donations through a charity’s Facebook donation buttons. The program will start on Nov. 15, 2022 and runs through December 31, 2022. Meta has not released the time that the program will kick off. It was 8am Eastern Time previously.
Meta will match up to $100 per donor and it works this way.
- You must have a Facebook account to participate, so create one in advance if you do not have one.
- Go to the Maasai Education Foundation Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/MaasaiEducationFoundation/) on Nov. 15, hit the blue MEF “Donate” button (or link we’ll send out a link to our recurring donation fundraiser beforehand) and set up a recurring monthly donation. It is good to make a small donation beforehand if you have not donated through Facebook before, so Facebook has your credit card info.
- Facebook will match up to $100 in monthly recurring donations per person, so the optimum benefit for MEF is if you set up a $100 recurring monthly donation.
- When your second recurring monthly donation occurs, Meta will match the donation you made on Nov. 15, up to $100. The December and subsequent recurring donations are not matched though we would of course love receiving them. In reality, it is a 50% match since two donations are required to receive one match.
- In summary, if you set up a recurring donation on Nov. 15 of $100, your credit card will be charged $100 on Nov. 15 and then again on Dec 15 and MEF would receive a one-time $100 match from Meta for your Nov. 15 donation. If you donated $75/month, MEF would receive a one-time $75 match.
- After your December recurring payment, you could stop your recurring payments, if you so desired. Steps to stop recurring payments are as follows:
For iPhone or Android Device
- On your iPhone or Android device, open m.facebook.com
- Tap Main Menu in the top right of Facebook.
- Scroll down and tap Meta Pay.
- Tap See all next to Recurring Payments and select the recurring donation you want to cancel.
- At the bottom, tap Cancel Subscription.
- Tap Cancel Recurring Donation, then tap Cancel.
To make sure that the recurring donation was canceled, you can go back into the “Recurring Payments” section of Meta Pay and tap on the donation. The status will say “Cancelled.”
For a Personal Computer
- On your PC, open your Facebook page at facebook.com
- Tap your profile picture on the top right
- Select Settings & privacy
- Select Settings
- Select Orders and payments under Settings on the far left (You will see the credit cards you have on file and any recent donation activity)
- Select recurring payments (any recurring payments you have will be listed)
- Select the recurring payment you want to cancel
- At the bottom, tap Cancel Subscription.
- Tap Cancel Recurring Donation, then tap Cancel.
To make sure that the recurring donation was canceled, you can go back into the “Recurring Payments” section of Meta Pay and tap on the donation. The status will say “Cancelled.”
Once again, we would appreciate a recurring monthly donation but if you would like to make a larger donation and be match on GivingTuesday, make your one-time donation after 8am Eastern Time on GivingTuesday, Nov 29 and your donation will be matched until our matching funds are exhausted. Currently, we have $10,000 in pledged GivingTuesday matching funds.
